Freedom Isn't Free

 By Marianne Mauti

Freedom Isn't Free

As we celebrate our Nation's Independence Day, let us remember the freedom we have as Americans. I spend a lot of time lamenting the coarse our country is on, it’s only because I love her so much. But no lamenting today! I have traveled all over the world and I can still say that America is the greatest Country in the world! The rights afforded to us in the Constitution and the Bill of rights, give us the greatest unprecedented freedom any country has ever afforded her people in the history of mankind!

Thank you God for America, thank you to our forefathers who dreamed the dream and sacrificed everything to bring it to pass, thank you to the thousands who fought to keep her free when the oppression of fascism and communism was threatening to come to her borders! Thank you to the men and women who guard her still!

God bless you and God bless America, land of the free and the home of the brave!

Happy 4th of July to all my followers. Have a safe and Happy Holiday! Don’t forget to say a small prayer of thanks to God for America and for all who willingly gave her, their last full measure of devotion!

I thought you might enjoy this poem I ran across not long ago. It was written by a Coast Guard pilot named Kelly Strong as a tribute to his father who served two tours of duty in Vietnam. Thank you for your inspiring words and you and your father’s service!

FREEDOM ISN’T FREE
By Kelly strong

I watched the flag pass by one day, It fluttered in the breeze;
A young marine saluted it, And then he stood at ease.

I looked at him in uniform, So young, so tall, so proud;
With hair cut square and eyes alert, He’d stand out in a crowd.

I thought, how many men like him, Had fallen through the years;
How many died on foreign soil, How many mothers’ tears.

How many pilots’ planes shot down, How many died at sea;
How many foxholes were solders’ graves, No, Freedom isn’t Free.

I heard the sound of taps one night, When everything was still;
I listened to the bugler play, And felt a sudden chill.

I wondered just how many times, That taps had meant, “Amen”;
When a flag had draped a coffin, Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives;
Of the fathers, sons and husbands, With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard, At the bottom of the sea;
Of unmarked graves in Arlington, No, Freedom isn’t free.
